«This Is America»: les Grammy Awards ont fait dimanche la part belle à l’Amérique dans deux genres très différents, en célébrant le rap provocateur de Childish Gambino d’un côté mais en décernant de l’autre le titre d’«album de l’année» à la chanteuse country Kacey Musgraves.
Même si les stars du rap Kendrick Lamar et Drake, en tête en nombre de nominations, sont reparties sans récompense majeure, l’industrie du disque américaine a tout de même mis cette année à l’honneur les artistes féminins ou issus de minorités ethniques.
Elle avait fréquemment été accusée par le passé de négliger la diversité dans ses choix, et a mis en place une task force pour y remédier depuis l’an dernier. Symbole de cette ouverture, l’ex Première dame Michelle Obama a fait une apparition surprise sur scène, vantant le rôle de la musique pour promouvoir cette diversité.
«La musique nous montre que tout ça est important, chaque histoire et chaque voix, chaque note au sein de chaque chanson», a-t-elle déclaré dans une intervention résolument féministe aux côtés des grandes stars de la musique que sont Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga et Jada Pinkett Smith.
Diversité aussi pour le spectaculaire show d’ouverture bilingue anglais-espagnol, lancé à grands renforts de paillettes et de déhanchés par Camila Cabello et le rappeur Young Thug, bientôt rejoints par les très caliente Ricky Martin et J.Balvin
Childish Gambino, alter ego musical du comédien Donald Glover («Atlanta»), a quant à lui raflé la mise dimanche soir: «enregistrement de l’année» et «chanson de l’année» pour son hymne politiquement incorrect «This Is America». Hybride de gospel et de rap, truffé de pamphlets contre les excès qui secouent la société américaine, il a balayé les favoris Drake ou Lady Gaga. C’est la première fois dans l’histoire des Grammy Awards que ces deux prestigieuses récompenses sont accordées à un morceau de rap.
L’artiste militant avait toutefois boycotté la cérémonie et n’avait pas réagi à ses récompenses dimanche soir. «Il était temps que quelque chose comme ça se passe aux Grammys» a déclaré à la presse le compositeur suédois Ludwig Goransson qui a co-écrit le morceau avec Childish Gambino.
Le clip accompagnant le tube a lui aussi été primé dimanche. Dans cette vidéo provocatrice, vue par des dizaines de millions de personnes sur internet, Childish Gambino dénonce le règne des armes à feu et du racisme dans le pays. Il a aussi eu la récompense de «la meilleure performance rap/chant».
Kacey Musgraves est l’autre grande gagnante d’une soirée qui rappelle que les Grammy Awards restent une cérémonie fondamentalement américaine même si elle voit défiler des stars d’envergure internationale. La jeune femme a obtenu quatre prix au total, dont celui très convoité «album de l’année» pour «Golden Hour». La frêle musicienne a devancé Cardi B, Janelle Monae et Brandi Carlile lors d’une édition des Grammys où les femmes avaient fait un retour en force après avoir été curieusement snobées l’an dernier, en plein mouvement #MeToo.
Lady Gaga n’a pas décroché de prix dans une catégorie majeure mais repart tout de même avec trois statuettes, dont deux pour «Shallow», la ballade romantique enregistrée avec Bradley Cooper pour le film «A Star Is Born», où elle joue également. Autre déçue de la soirée, la rappeuse gouailleuse Cardi B qui doit se contenter du Grammy du «meilleur album rap».
Sérieux prétendant au podium, Kendrick Lamar a échoué pour la quatrième fois dans la catégorie de «l’album de l’année» avec la bande originale du film «Black Panther». Il repart avec le prix de la «meilleure performance rap» alors que Drake a «meilleure chanson de rap» de l’année grâce à son tube planétaire «God’s Plan».
Dans la catégorie «révélation de l’année», où six candidats sur huit étaient dans femmes, c’est la Britannique Dua Lipa, 23 ans, qui l’a emporté avec sa pop-électro sensuelle. Au total, pas moins de 84 récompenses ont été décernées.
Alicia Keys qui animait la soirée de gala a tenu parole quand elle avait promis cette année des performances «de malade» avec des shows de Lady Gaga et Cardi B. Elle-même détentrice de 15 Grammys, Alicia Keys a enflammé la salle en enchaînant – sur deux pianos à la fois – une sélection de tubes «qu’elle aurait aimé écrire», de Sting à Drake, en passant par Coldplay.
La soirée a aussi été marquée par des numéros d’icônes de la musique américaine comme la chanteuse de country Dolly Parton ou encore la pétillante Diana Ross, montée sur scène pour célébrer son 75e anniversaire
